About Democracy
Democracy means ruled by people and it comes from greek. Democracy began in ancient Greece and has carried on until today but it has changed a lot since then. Now democracy is mixed with a lot of different governing systems such as oligarchy and monarchy. However, there are two elementary forms of democracy, direct and representative democracy.
Direct democracy has everyone participating in making decisions and politics with direct elections from all the people on political issues and matters. On the other hand, representative democracy is when people elect leaders to make the decisions representing a certain group of people, which is most common and can trace its origins to the Roman republic, European middle ages and the French and American revolutions.

Democracy in Animal Farm
In Animal Farm, there isn't really any democracy because all the pigs make every decisions about what happens in the farm. This is strange because the pigs state that every animal is equal but the animals are not given equal treatment in making decisions and plans for the farm.
In the Russian revolution, after Lenin and Stalin become the leaders, the people of Russia did not get a chance to represent themselves in the government, speak their voices and participate in the politics of the country. The similar setting is made in Animal Farm with no democracy but a statement of equality which is interesting and Orwell makes a connection to the Russian revolution by building up the similar situation in the book. This works well because it repeats the real events and repetition is easily noticeable helping the readers make the connection.
